Tuesday, January 22nd

3. Use your Social Studies book to read Chapter 5, Lesson 4 on The Republic of Texas on page 1206 - 208 or log onto Pearson and have it read to you.

Republic of Texas

• Texans won the Revolution at the Battle of San Jacinto
• Texas became the Republic of Texas
• Established a constitution and 3 branches of government
• Sam Houston was the 1st and 3rd president of the Republic of Texas
• Mirabeau Lamar was the 2nd president of the Republic of Texas

Challenges of the Republic

• Debt created by the war

• Texans arrive to drive out last Mexican Troops
• General Cos' army is defeated and leaves
• Ben Milam is killed
• Texans think the war is over

• Peace and War Parties formed
• Create temporary government
• Henry Smith - governor
• Sam Houston - Commander in Chief of Army
• Austin sent to U.S. for support

Battle of the Alamo

• February 4th - March 6th 1836
• Texans did not want to give up the Alamo to Santa Anna
• Texans were pinned in the Alamo and a battle began
• Mexico won
• "Remember the Alamo" - cry to encourage revolt

Important People of the Alamo

• William B. Travis - Texas military, leader, wrote "Victory or Death" letter, died at the Alamo
• James Bowie - Texas military leader, fell sick and died at the Alamo
• David Crockett - famous frontiersman, fought and died at the Alamo
• James Bonham - last to get to the Alamo, was too late.

Wednesday, January 16th

Runaway Scrape

• Many Texans were scared by Santa Anna after the Battle of the Alamo
• Families fled east to the US and left their homes and belongings behind

Goliad

• Fannin and his men surrendered to General Urrea
• Santa Anna ordered his army to shoot the prisoners
• Francita Alvarex helped some prisoners escape
• Mexican soldiers fired on Fannin and his unarmed men
• This event earned the battle cry "Remember Goliad"

Thursday, January 17th

• Mexico surrendered

Treaty of Velasco

• Ended the war
• Houston's men captured Santa Anna
• Mexican Troops were removed from San Antonio
• Santa Anna was not allowed to leave Texas until he talked with President Burnet
• The treaty was signed by Santa Anna and President Burnet
